Blog Post: Confessions Of A Recruiter - Part 2

posted Friday, June 13, 2008 3:31 PM

My company, Aequicap, often has multiple open positions posted on various sites, such as this one, CareerBuilder, and others. Often, these positions vary greatly in responsibilities and skills required.

Lately I have seen the same candidates applying for several jobs I posted. I truly understand that when you need a job - you need a job! Times are especially difficult now and it is tempting to apply to as many jobs a possible and hope that you get called by someone.

However...when I see the same person applying for Attorney, Imaging Clerk, and Claims Adjuster, it sends an impression that the applicant either did not read the responsibilities and requirements of the positions or thought that I wouldn't mind that they were completely unqualified. Even if they were qualified for one of the positions, I question their judgement on why they applied for the other positions.

My advice is to limit your applications only to those jobs for which you are qualified. It is still OK, even if you only meet the minimum requirements.

So, for example, if you meet the qualifications of our Imaging Clerk but do not have a Law Degree and are not a member of the Florida Bar, you should not also apply for our Attorney position. Doing so will likely block you from consideration for the Imaging Clerk position.

You are wasting the time of those majority that do not apply for positions they MAY be qualified for. To presume that there may be more folks out there who apply for any and all posted employment ads, despite their qualifications - well, this is ludicrous! You just love to see your name in a blog that might smack of sensationalism, huh?

Could unemployment be so bad that what this nerd is implying be remotely true? I do not think so... I am on all the websites for unemployment and also read the latest local news, i.e strategists for upcoming employment, job fairs, you name it. I thought I was pretty much informed.

I'm beginning to think I should be a dentist or a veterinarian. Maybe with some good phony paperwork, I'll land that job of a dream after all!

Let me know what you think?!

Alice
