Blog Post: Are you seeking the job of your dreams, however you lack experience and skills...?
posted Tuesday, July 8, 2008 10:57 AM
Have you ever seen a job posted online that you would really like to apply for, however, due to your work history your credentials are not an exact match? Here are some long and short term ways to overcome a less than perfect match: Long Term: Apply for a different position at a lower level in the company just to get a foot in the door. Learn what you can about the company and start to build the skills you need to eventually apply for the job you really want to have. Short Term: Although your resume may not exactly match the position, you can tailor your resume to be more targeted. Think of those core skills that you have utilized in the past which may be applicable to this posted position. Let’s say you are looking to go into sales and your skills have all been in over-the-phone customer service. In customer service you listen to customers, overcome their objections and provide solutions. These are all skills needed in the sales field as well. Never put information in your resume that is not accurate or truthful. However, you can certainly emphasize those skill areas which are similar to the skills needed for the position you are seeking. Long or Short Term: Temp in a position that will help you to gain the skills needed for your next career move. If you wish to move into human resources but have not had the experience, talk to a temp agency to determine if they can place you in any part-time or temp positions in human resources. Very often when working a temp position, a full-time job may become available. Now with your newly acquired skills you can apply. Consider all of these options as you move forward in your job search. A targeted resume and cover letter will make the case that you are a good fit for the company and the job. Remember to stay positive, learn new skills and try to use a variety of approaches as you seek out the job of your dreams.
