Being an Independent Insurance agent gives you alot of advantages, and here are a few:

You get to set your own hours, so your work works around you than you working around your work. This is great if you have children or a spouse, you can actually make time for them when you want to make time for them, not when someone tell you that you can.
You get paid alot from day one: most people in other jobs will start at $8/hr which will give you $1,280/mth or $640/wk before taxes then have to work 5 to 7 more yrs to get to $12 or $15/hr. An independent agent can write five $50/mth life insurance policy in one month and make $1,650 his or her first month on the job. The average Insurance agent writes 7 to 10 policies a month.
You get to work with more than one company: Instead of working for one company and have to offer only what that company offers. You get the chance to shop for your client so they get the best product at the best price.
You get to help people in a way that truly matters: The very first time you save a client money that they can put into savings or use to reduce their debt, is the day you will realize the important role insurance agents play in their clients life and the community.
